PPTP & rdesktop

Fri, 27 May 2005

Months ago I attempted to get PPTP (pptp-linux) and rdesktop working under Linux but failed miserably. I had no idea what was going wrong, and I eventually gave up. Actually I don't know if rdesktop would have worked or not, because I couldn't get that far. I needed PPTP so I could authenticate myself and reach a computer inside the private network.

So yesterday I tried again, using the GUI utility pptpconfig to configure and start PPTP. Oddly enough, it worked on the second try. Wow! I managed to get routing figured out too, and then rdesktop worked fine.

The problem now is that I don't know why it's working now and wasn't then. Routing wasn't the problem; I didn't get as far as routing. I had to recompile my kernel yesterday because I was missing a module, but I don't know if that was the problem months ago. I've compiled several kernels since then, and the error messages were different then, too.

Now my complaint is that although the GUI works, I haven't figured out how to get PPTP started and routing configured using the command-line tools. The GUI was fine for proof-of-concept, but I don't want the screen clutter while I'm working. (I hope it doesn't take me another six months to get that working too.)
