Last weekend Jeff and I went to an event in Stromgard, which is in Washington but much closer to Portland than to Seattle. It's also a fairly rural area, which gave it a very different feel from Madrone events. It was... interesting.
I attended two classes, one on tourney cooking (by Anne-Marie, recently Baroness of Madrone) and one on soapmaking. I plan to put my new knowledge about period food into practice very soon. Unfortunately the soapmaking class wasn't terribly inspiring to me, but that's probably because soapmaking just isn't my thing. I was happy to learn more about it and to see it done, but I would really have liked to learn more about period soapmaking (with which the instructor seemed surprisingly unaquainted).
While I was doing that, Jeff took a couple of classes on his own, including a basic blacksmithing workshop with Master Grendal, one of the best blacksmiths in this kingdom. He made a S-hook and a fire poker and is very proud of himself.
