I (still) love my job

Today was great fun. Instead of work this morning, I had a skills assessment for the KCLS public services employment pool. I won't go into the details, but it involved a lot of pretending to be a librarian greeting patrons, helping them with reference questions, performing reader's advisory, and giving a short booktalk. I was terribly nervous about the booktalk, but it went fine. I had a blast with the whole thing, actually, and I was kind of sorry when it ended!

After that, I had lunch with my iSchool friend Jenn, who is now a children's librarian at KCLS and was attending an all-day meeting at the Service Center. It was interesting to hear about what her job is like and how she's adjusting to it. It's kind of reassuring to hear that moving to full-time employment is also a bit of an adjustment for her (though for different reasons).

After lunch, of course, I stayed and did a couple of hours of work. Partially it was so I could leave earlier tomorrow, but mostly I just couldn't tear myself away. Especially since I'll be working more or less full time as of next week, I'm really feeling the pressure of all the work that needs to be done now but for which there is no time in my 15-hour week! I am frankly amazed at the amount of work that I get done in 15 hours every week, and I doubt (unfortunately) that my productivity will scale linearly when my hours increase.

It is incredibly strange to contrast my work now with what I did last summer under Meg. Even my job title is (finally) changing; tomorrow is my last day as an intern. Thereafter I shall be known as a librarian trainee (I'm thinking of Systems Librarian Trainee as a working title). Exciting!

Oh, and did I mention that Kathy is going on vacation next week? I'll be more or less on my own as the ILS person. Eeep!
