I discovered that my own CSS font definitions were causing problems with my own browser, Firefox on Linux! That's not good, so I removed all definitions except for generic serif,
and it's much better. My only problem now is that I can't figure out how to make those weird quotation marks go away. Anyone who knows more than I do about fonts on Linux (or fonts in general) is welcome to suggest what to do.
On the other hand, I finally managed to create a decent screenshot in Linux, so I'm pretty happy about that. Incidentally, I wish so much of learning weren't about figuring out the right questions to ask, because when one doesn't know what keywords to use when searching for a Linux screenshot utility, one is screwed. I ended up using KSnapshot, but only because I figured out to search in dselect using shot
rather than screenshot
or screen.
*sigh*

Ah yes, the mess that is fonts in X11. I don't know how you feel about free as in beer software, but "apt-get install msttcorefonts" should get you 100% legal TrueType fonts courtesy Microsoft. See http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/ for more details.
I'm not much help for anything else, I'm running Fedora Core 2 with GNOME 2.6 here and your quotes look fine. Hmm, the search box looks normal size to me with Firefox, but too big like your screenshot with Konqueror.
Oh, and did you notice that you're describing Information Behavio{u}r: "I wish so much of learning weren't about figuring out the right questions to ask"? Go read Taylor some more (ducks).

Oh, and I forgot, if you want to know more read the XFree86 Font De-uglification HOWTO, though it's a little out of date now a lot still applies to Debian Stable.

All I need is a good Linux reference librarian.
Yes, I've got msttcorefonts installed, thanks. I'll look at the link you provided in your second comment. Even slightly outdated information is useful, since what I don't know about fonts is quite a lot.

That text box
So I finally managed to solve the little problem I had with text boxes being too large. I tried...
