I want my DSL

Mon, 31 May 2004

I'm getting really fed up with AOL. Last week I missed out on a lot of potential productivity because I couldn't keep a connection for more than 5 minutes. This doesn't mean logon, get disconnected, log back on. That wouldn't be so bad. No, this means logon, get disconnected, wait five minutes, then log back on. Grrr. I'm pretty sure that lots of the connection problems are with Qwest rather than AOL, but I'm also sure that AOL's software has problems which don't allow it to cope very well with the disconnections.

I've been trying to get penggy working under Debian, and I've made some progress. On the other hand, it's still not working, and really I'd rather not spend a ton of time on it. If it works, great! It means that I have a little bit of net access while I switch to a Real ISP. It doesn't mean that I'm going to stay with AOL.

I'm sick and tired of the connection problems, of having to run their stupid client while I'm online, of not having a real IP address (AOL sends everything through proxy servers, and even the router on the outside of our house LAN doesn't have an IP address), of not having a SMTP server to send my mail through, of not being able to update my Debian packages at home.

Jeff is moving into this house at the end of June, and we're going to share DSL service. If my landlords want to switch ISPs, we'll all share, and it'll be cheaper for all of us. If not, I'll just share with Jeff.

Pete has been making noises for a long time about wanting to switch, but nothing's been done. I've let him know that this month is the last for me, so we'll see what happens. Either way, this is my last month on AOL.
