It’s been a busy weekend, so I’m going to blog about it in installments.
On Friday evening iKnit (the iSchool knitting club) had its first beginning knitter’s workshop. At least, Jenine (the organizer) called it a workshop, but the teaching was decentralized. We had five teachers and three learners, so people paired off one-on-one and the extra two sat by and munched and knitted and chatted. It was great.
I took several knitting books and scrap yarn to give away and several knitting projects to show off and the knitting needle holders to really show off. I still had the chenille washcloths that I made for Caro and Erik’s wedding (back in August!), so I took those and my leftover yarn and the pattern. One young woman at the workshop knew how to knit straight but not how to increase or decrease, so I suggested that she try a washcloth. She also admired the felted bag that holds my yarn notions and took all the yarn scraps from that. I was both surprised to see all my yarn snatched up and pleased to have evidently inspired another knitter.
Everyone brought finished projects to show off, and it was fascinating to see how unique each person’s style is. I had a selection of small creations: a pair of socks, two washcloths, a scarf in basket-weave pattern, and a felted bag. Almost everything Jenine brought was of brightly-colored eyelash yarn. Stacy specializes in colorful hats in complicated patterns.
I am eager for this to happen again. I think that instead of having a workshop
which might turn off knitters who aren’t interested in teaching, we should just make a point of letting beginning knitters know that they are always welcome at our get-togethers. I can’t imagine teaching not going on at these things. And there will be more knitting socials; the next is on May 21. I can’t wait.
