Toejam and Earl

Sun, 18 Jan 2004

Last weekend, when Jeff and I were in Olympia, we played a fun little Sega game called Toejam and Earl. I had never played it before, and it turned out that I liked it a lot, mainly because it's a very collaborative game. Two people can play at the same time, one as Toejam and one as Earl, and the game is set up so that the two friends work together to find all the pieces of their spaceship and get away from all the crazy earthlings. Not only is the victory shared, but Toejam and Earl can help each other along the way. If one character opens a gift while the other is close, both get the benefits; if one is healthier than the other, they can average their health-points by walking up to each other and high-fiving. If one uses up all his lives, he can even ask the still-living character to give him a spare life. That's one of my favorite features, because I used up all my lives pretty fast, but Jeff always gave me another life because it's no fun to play alone.

Oh, cute. What platform is this on?

Hey Laura. It's Liz. Long time, no see. David sent this website link to me. We were just wondering what you had been up to and where you were now, and he found this site in his Favorites list. I thought I'd drop you a line. I don't know what your email address is anymore. So email me. Let's catch up. [email address removed because of spammers—LBM]

It's on Sega, and it's fairly old; there's Toejam and Earl III which is lots newer. But unless you have Sega, you still can't play it. Rats.

For me, this is incentive to go visit Jeff's mother...

For the record, TJ&E is definitely a cute game with a style modelled after the early 80's hip-hop movement (eg. style like Flava Flav of Public Enemy and the like). In other words, it's Phat.

The fan base of TJ&E are all about my age. We were in the 10-13 range when TJ&E was released, and when TJ&EIII came out, we're all in our early 20's. The flavor of the game has been updated. As my friend Ted put it, he was mildly shocked (not offended) when they swore. So, apparently, the game's rating grew up with its fan base. I don't know how explicit it is, or how different, because I have yet to play it, but I still really want to play it (it's on the Xbox, which is mildly unfortunate).
