Vicious little devils, those onions. Bite you as soon as look at you. Why, just today one of them got me good. I was just checking it out before laying it on the cutting board, running my hand over it to make sure it was whole and healthy, and it sank its teeth into my thumb!
Okay, I'm probably attributing malice to a perfectly innocent onion. I'm sure it was merely self-defense. Truth is, the onion gave me a nasty splinter. And that wasn't the worst that happened today, merely the most implausible.
Early this afternoon, while I was cutting up a chicken for stock, I managed to cut my left pinky finger fairly deeply, on the side of the fleshy tip. It didn't hurt all that much, but it bled a lot. I stuck a band-aid on it at first and forgot about it, until I noticed the blood kind of seeping through the holes. It occurred to me that this was not a good thing, so I took off the band-aid, wrapped my finger in a wad of paper towel, applied pressure, and called Jeff, who had just left to get groceries. He grabbed his first-aid kit from home and drove straight back to tend to my wounds (the cut and the splinter, which had also been inflicted in his absence). It eventually stopped bleeding, probably due to the pressure I was exerting on it, and now I've just got a small band-aid on it, to close it and to keep stuff from getting in.
So much for self-injury. I've also been terribly scatterbrained, forgetting key ingredients to every one of the dishes I planned to prepare this weekend. All in all, Laurabelle has had a Bad Day! But that just makes me more thankful for my Wonderful Boyfriend who is fixing dinner right now, since I have proved myself incompetent. Dinner is breaded liver, plus some concoction out of onions, mushrooms, carrot, raisins, and balsamic vinegar. Jeff thought it up because I neglected to remember a vegetable (quelle surprise!).
