I really should have been in bed more than an hour ago, but I don't want to let go of what has really been quite a good day. In fact, the past couple of days have been pretty good, especially since Wednesday was crap. Wednesday I had a fever, had a long school day, and was generally unhappy. Thursday I took the day off, played with my blog, did a bit of work, and basically let myself get healthy. Today I went back to school.
I'm not going to recount my day completely. I just want to express my appreciation for all the nice things that have happened. Mostly this is people: Alita who gave me job leads, Pete and Mary who bought me milk and shared the kitchen with me this evening, and especially my parents.
Recently I wrote about my thinking about the Peace Corps. Of course I talked to my parents about this, and yesterday I received a lovely card from my mother:
All your suggested plans sound exciting to us. We are really glad you are able to explore so many options.
Are you aware that as Dad graduated from CalTech, he was accepted into the Peace Corps. His parents were extremely upset and he went on to Harvard Graduate School. We will support anything you decide to do and will probably be envious.
I wouldn't quote my mother's letter, except that it moved me. I take it so much for granted that my parents will support me in anything I choose to do, since they have faith in my ability to choose well for myself. They take seriously their opportunity and responsibility to advise me, but they have always encouraged me to be independent and responsible for myself. (Their advice is often You can do it!
) I take my parents' unconditional love and support too much for granted, but becoming newly conscious of this gift makes it all the more precious.
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for my life and for my empowerment.
